which 2.5" 1TB 7200RPM HDD: HGST Travelstar 7K1000 vs WD black

i'm looking for a good performing 7200RPM HDD for a PS4 pro. i came across these 2 drives and other then the longer warranty offered by the WD black are there any advantages between the 2 drives? i'm also wondering if western digital made any improvements or updates to it or all they did was rebrand an old Hitachi drive

i am not interested in seagate's SSHD drives as they are just 5400RPM drives with a small memory chip

I wouldn't expect much difference in performance between 7200RPM 2.5" drives. I'd concentrate on user feedback for RELIABILITY instead.

*also, a 2TB HDD will perform better than a 1TB HDD assuming all other specs are about the same. The reason is that even if you max out at 1TB on both drives that data should end up on the OUTER EDGES of the 2TB HDD which on average has a faster access time.

Does it need to be 2.5" or would you be willing to get a 3.5" external USB3.0 HDD as those will be cheaper AND faster.

I found a few LINKS too:

https://hddmag.com/top-7-best-ps4-1tb-and-2tb-hard-drives/
https://www.gamesradar.com/best-hard-drive-for-ps4/

So again, the biggest factors in performance are:
1) platter size (rotational speed), and
2) platter capacity (rotational speed), and
3) RPM
4) other specs (most newer drives should be similar. even cache shouldn't matter much)

I know the XBOX ONE has an external HDD that doesn't use an AC adapter since it powers off the USB3.0 plug. That's recommended to avoid the adapter though it should never be used with a USB2.0 plug.

Not sure if the PS4 has one or if you can use the same one branded for the XBOX ONE.

unfortunately a 2TB drive is not an option, the 2TB drives are thicker then 1TB ones and will not fit in a PS4 without some modding or taking it apart to install the drive

The 2.5" HDD is 9.5mm thick.

Yes, there are thicker drives (and thinner 7mm drives that work fine too though may need a spacer for some devices) but there are 2TB HDD's that are 9.5mm thick.

Actually, they even have 7mm 2TB 2.5" HDD's now.

7mm 2.5" HDD 2TB (5400RPM probably):

9.5mm 2.5" SSHD 2TB (5400RPM probably):

Not sure about 7200RPM in 2TB that is 9.5mm or less. I looked for a short while but didn't see any. Still, I'd choose 2TB 5400RPM over 1TB 7200RPM for the capacity, and performance is hard to compare because as the drive fills up the 7200RPM advantage starts to disappear (the lower RPM gets offset by the fact the same data is closer to the outer edge).

If you're sure 1TB is fine then go ahead, but the you already know 500GB isn't enough so... ?

And again, a 3.5" USB3.0 HDD is out of the question?

Also, I could be wrong but the 4TB USB drive in the following article looks closer to 2.5" dimensions so is it a 2x 2.5" (RAID0?) setup?

Anyway, that HDD is pretty unobtrusive and just needs a single cable. Here's a link to the official page right from that article:
https://www.seagate.com/ca/en/consumer/play/game-drive-ps4/

It has 1TB, 2TB and 4TB options... remember if you get a 1TB INTERNAL HDD to replace the 500GB unit you're adding roughly 465GB of usable space so you may run out of space again... heck, I have a game that uses 130GB alone.

i am only looking to see if anyone else here had some experience with performance between both drives. i am not looking to discuss additional options with this topic
