Upgrading CPU advice

Hello,

I am looking to upgrade my PC but I am not an expert. My current PC looks like this:

CPU: AMD Athlon x4 860k 3.7ghz
Mobo: A68HM-E33-V2
GPU: GTI 1070
Ram: 8GB DDR3
PSU: 600W WPM600 bronze

The graphics card is fairly new so I was hoping I wouldn't need to upgrade that. I saw that the Intel Core i7-8700 looks very good so I was considering to get it. Would it work fine in my current setup? Also, should I look to upgrade ram. I really don't know much about ram. Should I just get 8GB more of DDR3 or make the switch to DDR4?

Any advice appreciated :)

Core i7-8700 is a very good CPU and you will need a 300 series LGA 1151 motherboard and DDR4 RAM.
The same if you go with Ryzen 7 2700 which is similar in performance. You will need a AM4 motherboard and DDR4 RAM.

Thanks for the replies! You guys are super helpful. I shall probably take your advice and get a I5 8600 processor then. With regards to the ram and the mobo, there are so many different brands and types out there, is there anything I should keep in mind before I go out and buy all those components? Also, should I get 16GB of DDR4, will it help to future-proof my pc a bit? I feel like 8GB is a bit dated now.

Thanks!

Hello.

Having researched what you guys mentioned and I was thinking to buy the following:
i5 8600k cpu
gigabyte h370 hd3 mobo
g.skill tridentz DDR4 2400 mhz

Will all this be compatible with my existing PSU and my graphics card? If yes, I shall place an order :)

Thanks guys!

I wouldn't trust myself to overclock lol.

How about instead:
Gigabyte B360M DS3H
i5 8600K
g.skill tridentz DDR4 2400 mhz

There's almost no price difference in 2400 mhz and 3000 mhz for the ram, is there any benefit for me to getting 3000 mhz and would that then be compatible with the above mobo?

Thanks!
