PC Black screens on intensive games - it didn't used to!

I am having problems with my PC. What is happening is some intensive games (Fortnite, PUBG, Rainbow Six Siege) are giving my system black screens when I try to play them at ultra. My system USED to be able to handle this. A temporary fix, (at least for Fortnite) is running the game at the lowest settings possible. This prevents black screens in the games that I normally can run at ultra. I'm not entirely sure on what the matter is with my system. I can run Arma 3 (very CPU intensive) at all Ultra with zero complications. I am convinced that it is a memory problem. I ran a windows diagnostics and it reported no errors, but I really don't think it could be anything else.
Looking for fixes for this!!

CPU: Intel i5 - 6600k @ 3.5 ghz
MOBO: Asus Z170-A
RAM: 32gb G.Skill Ripjaws V DDR4-2400
GPU: Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 1080
PSU: EVGA SuperNova P2 850w 80+ Platinum
OS: Win 10 Pro 64bit

Your GPU is dying, the more you make it do, the more black screen, I have a gtx 280 that does that when I try to do any kind of gaming because of how much i've use it. Try to look up the oven method for your GPU.
 


please do not follow the advice above from the other poster.

Run something like HWmon while you are playing a game. Then alt-tab out of the game and take a screenshot of HWmon, so we can see what is happening with your hardware.

Try the basic things first. Full fresh install of GPU Drivers. Make sure your mobo Bios is updated to the latest one. Install all drivers for your mobo from the manufacturers website.

You can test your mem with memtest86+ to see if your ram is okay.

From the way it seems like, I've experienced this issue multiple times on 4 different GPUs, I've had about 2-3 people with the same problem. When a GPU comes to the end of its life, you see artifacts, but that is all the time, black screens when intense tasks are needed to be done. I can prove this with a video if you'd like.

What are you talking about? Your advice was to bake the GPU, without offering standard fixes! Not a good solution.

I haven't gotten the chance to monitor temps but I feel that's not so important as it's been a continuous degradation of graphics quality capabilities. I am not able to consistently play at high anymore.
 




Well, its kinda important to monitor temps and too high temps will throttle the GPU/GPU, It could be the thermal paste on GPU is wearing and causing high temps, which will result in issues. That's probably unlikely though as your GPU is only 2 years old or so, but it has been known to happen.

So, did you OC the card at any point? If it's OC'ed take the OC off, and run at stock. Same with CPU. Some games are very particular to OC settings. I play BF1/COD WW2 and both react oddly to a moderate GPU OC. Whereas other games don't react at all. Even though the OC settings are thoroughly tested for stability using superposition among other apps for testing.

As a last resort, and given you have so many crashes it's worthwhile re-installing windows too. The OS may have become corrupt.

This was happening recently to a PC my nephew is using. It has a GTX 1070 Ti in it and started black screening on him while he was gaming. Worked fine in Safe Mode, but normal Windows would just go to a black screen. After doing some diagnostics/tests, I decided to remove the GPU. I cleaned out the slot it was installed in with 90% alcohol & cleaned off the contacts on the card with the same. I also took off the heatsink and replaced the thermal paste on the GPU.

Afterwards the computer started to work normally again. Found that he was playing games in 4k res w/ everything set to high. I ended up changing the res on the games to 1080p just to make sure. I also aired out the system.
