So, I am getting about 5mbs with my desktop plugged into the router via Ethernet. This would be fine if I lived alone, however I do not. It is very slow, and sometimes the internent connection just doesn't work. I was wondering, if I get a faster modem w

Solution
Pay for better internet. If you pay for and get 5mbs, a faster modem wont do anything, most likely the modem you own now can do at least 100.

Yes you have to get a better plan, 5 mbs is pretty slow by today's standards and as you noted the more people sharing that connection the slower it will be I would say any router built in the 5 (maybe 10) years should support at least 100mbs wired (assuming working correctly) so until your IPS get close to those speeds no need to replace it.

It really depends on what you want, what you are willing to pay, and what technologies are available.

I have friends who would LOVE to have 5Mb; until recently they only got ~240Kb, but after a local infrastructure upgrade, they now scale the heights of 1Mb.

You dont say where in the world you are, but there are much faster ways of connecting for about 90% of the Western World, although some of the more remote areas would have to pay a lot to get there.

Possible options include cable, hybrid fibre, full fibre, area wifi networks and 4G.
