Installing new GPU

So i have GTS 450 1GB, my friend is throwing away his GTX 660 and decided to give it to me. Since i will.be upgrading from 450 to 660, will i need to know anything in advance about instalation? Like any spacial cabels needed?

The 660 proably has additional PCIe power connectors. apart from that there's no difference, just plug it in, connect the extra powercords and make sure to uninstall old drivers with DDU and install new latest drivers

So will i need additional cabels to buy in advance? Or it will come with this extra power cords and i'll be able to connect it to my 350watt shitty PSU without any problems? And what's DDU?

Depends on your current PSU. Could you tell me the model? But seeing as you said shitty psu it would be a good idea to get a new, high quality psu anyways.

DDU is a tool for clean DisplayDriverUninstall(er) (you see where DDU comes from). It's free to use

Yea well, i did put in trust in this 10 year old cheap codegen 350 watt psu and guess what, it works without a single problem even with everything overcklocked. I'm suspecting some psu salesmen sneaked into these forums

Nice attitude! People offer you advice on a question you asked and obviously don't know much about on the topic and you respond by trying to offend them. Did you consider that perhaps the 660 has a higher power draw than a 450? Do you realise that over time PSUs do degrade and effective output diminishes?

This isn't the first time i was given wrong, misleading information on this forum. I know what it "requires", i was asking for what it actually needs And did not get the right answer, psus degrading lol, i've had it for around 9-8 years, i don't think it will degrade any further.

Bald tyres still work on a car, doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to use them.

It’s a crappy psu that if it fails is far more likely to damage the rest of the pc. A good quality unit has far better protection built in. Also psu components deteriorate over time and usage, at 10 years old Id replace it even if it was a good quality unit. FYI it can only deliver 288w on the 12v rails according to it own sticker, you should think of this as a 300w unit. At the end of the day it’s your system so you decide if the risk is worth it.

He is giving good advice, you just don’t want to listen but you cannot say we did not tell you the risks.

What if you don’t know enough to ask the right questions?

Your GTS450 has a peak wattage of 106w according to Nvidia, overclocking will increase this.

The GTX660 has a peak wattage of 140w according to Nvidia. Again if you overclock it or the model comes already overclocked it will be higher. NVidia recommend a 450w psu for this gpu, they do add a bit extra to help cover lower end psu’s. As you can see even the base Nvidia models there is a 32% increase in power requirements.

So a low quality psu that could not deliver 300w on the 12v rails when new looks like a bad idea given the risk is potentially frying you whole system. Many of us on here have seen what low quality psu’s can do when they die, we have also seen the tear downs showing poor components, build quality and lack of safety features. We pass on thins knowledge to help you avoid issues but it’s your choice if the risk is acceptable to you.
