Question about i5-8400 & i7-7700

Hello,

Sorry if this has been posted before. I read in several threads that the i5-8400 would be better than the i7-7700 (non-K) for gaming. However, I have found several videos showing that the i7-7700 performs better in terms of FPS in games than the i5-8400. Please see here, here and here

What is the cause here and why is it still said that the i5-8400 is better for gaming?

There is a marginal difference between these CPUs. YouTube videos aren't the most accurate source of info btw. The first video is about the 8500 so cross it out. The second video shows a very slight FPS gain in certain games, owed to the higher clock of the 7700. The third paints the same image, giving the upper hand to the 8400 in some cases.

In conclusion, the 8400 is better for multitasking and the 7700 for gaming, as the former has higher thread count and the later higher clock speeds.
EDIT: *The 8400 has higher core count.

The 8400 has a higher core count not a higher thread count. 8400 has 6 cores but no hyperthreading so 1 thread for every core, the 7700 has 4 cores but has Hyperthreading so it has 2 threads for every core.
8400- 6 threads
7700- 8 threads

No, the 7700k should be better in games, because most of 'em don't scale well with CPU cores, so they can't make use of them all. So if a game only uses let's say 2cores, what matters is the speed of these cores, so the 7700k is the winner. However, the 8400 would be better for multitasking, exactly because other apps can make use of the extra cores it has. However, the difference really is marginal, so results may vary.

The difference is not going to be that big and when you want, you can at aleast upgrade to the 8600 or 8700K later down the road. Also it has 6 proper cores that will come into play which might help later down the road with games...Outright the 7700K is faster in some games now.

Depends on the game. The cores on the 7700 are a bit faster due to the slightly higher clock speed which gives it an edge in some games, but in higher threaded games the 8400 will do better as a thread processed on a core is faster that one done on hyperthreading. But this is also assuming you will be using a gpu and resolution setup where the CPU is the limiting factor. If you are using a mid range gpu @1080p or a high end gpu and 1440p or 4k resolution then you'll likely not see alot of difference between the 2 cpus.

Thanks a lot for the info fellas. One last question. I'm a bit in a dilemma at the moment after I found another option for me which is the i5-8600 (non-K).
I have to choose between an i5-8600 (non-K) with 16GB RAM or a 7700K with 8GB RAM. All other specs are the same and the PC's are at the same price. I'm not sure if the extra RAM would give a better gaming performance than a (marginal) better CPU. I'm playing at 1080p.

Some advice would be greatly appreciated.

Intel i5 8400 is better because is cheaper and it has 6 true cores and it mostly beats Intel i7 7700.

Newer maybe better!
If you of one of people that have no plans to Overclock and just game go for the highest locked performance CPU with H370 or B360 or H310.
