I tried searching old threads and found that i5 3470/i5 3570/i5 4440/i5 4460 pairs very well with GTX 970. I am unsure though if it is still the case as the threads ive seen are from 2014-16.

I currently have the below parts

AMD A6 5400k
GTX 970 4GB
4GB DDR 3 1600mhz
Corsair VS450

The cheapest available upgrade for me will be the i5 3470 as used 3470 comes pretty cheap now and I can still use my RAM and just add some in the future. I can also add additional 8GB of RAM if i get this 3rd gen. I will also upgrade my PSU once i sell the AMD cpu and mobo. I want to make sure that I will not encounter any issue in the future. Will it be okay to get i5 3rd gen or i5 4th gen?

My monitor is 1080p, computer will be used for Dota2, CSGO, TEKKEN 7 and other PS4/XBOX games available in PC, running virtual machines, productivity (browsing, streaming, HTPC etc)

I've read also that gtx970 is still powerful for today's games so I want to know your feedback with the processor im about to choose.

Is there a competition or big difference between I5 3470 and i5 4460? The price diff is around $40 between them. I saw some i5 3570 at $60 too.

I5 3470 - $50
i5 3570 - $60
i5 4460 - $80-90
i5 4670 + z87 - $130

I would just get into a new platform. a 2200g is like the same as a 4670
http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-4670-vs-AMD-Ryzen-3-2200G/m630vsm441832
a b450 motherboards like $50 2200g is like $90 and you could upgrade in the future...
its been hard for me to sell my old i7 2600k system because of these new chips are great and cheap, people who are paying 80-90 for an old part have the motherboard already and just want to slap one in there..

Thanks sir but I think going on a new platform is not my option as ddr4 prices are waaay too high and b450 are not around in my area yet. if they are available they cost around $120-150 which will be my cost for the whole upgrade i am planning.

I try to answer your question.
The Haswell (I5-4xxx) have an approximately 10% advantage over the Ivy Bridge (I5-3xxx) at same speed.
Their speeds, in order of power, are:
I5-4670 3.4GHz base 3.8GHz Turbo
I5-3570 3.4GHz Base 3.8GHz Turbo
I5-4460 3.2GHz Base 3.4GHz Turbo
I5-3470 3.2GHz Base 3.6GHz Turbo

It must be said that the four are much more powerful than your current processor. With any you will get a great improvement.

The only one that deserves to pay something else is I5-4670. The I5-4460 is similar or worse than the I5-3570.
