Gpu Overheating and overclocking

I just got a new mother board A320M-K, Cpu Ryzen 1300x, and 8gigs of ram. my old motherboard crapped out on me so I had to replace it so I'm still using my older Gpu which is a R9 280.

Heres the problem the gpu runs idle is around 50c I tried playing Total war warhammer as I had done on my old build without much fuss. So the Gpu starts running and plays the game very well I only had it on med settings there were no artifacts no studdering but within 10-20 secs of entering the map it overheats and shuts down. So I restart it and decide to "benchmark" it with a game called polybridge (this game is very low intensity you could play it on a phone) it clocks to 900+ mghrtz and heats up to 80c.

I know the problems are not airflow, my computer is clean so no dust,
Is my gpu dying?
