I recently made a new build using the gtx 970 and it started up fine however when i played games like fortnite at 160fps the temps for the gpu rose to 80 degrees and possibly could have gone higher and when browsing the internet it went to 55 to 65 degrees and there was also a slight burning smell when it rose to 80 as well as the air coming out of the exhaust and pc really hot can someone tell me if this is normal for a gtx 970 msi card as it is an old gen and if it isnt normal if there a way to fix it?

No, not normal. The high-ish temp alone isn't a big issue, but the burnt smell you speak of is. Used card?
The first thing I'd do is clean off and replace the old thermal paste. Then I'd use a thrid part pgm to set a better fan curve to keep temps lower if the new TIM alone didn't fix the issue.

Keep in mind, the card will throttle itself if temps get too high and cause damage. That is, if all is working as it should.
