Multiple copies in geographically diverse locations. Lets say you rip these 500 CDs and end up with 1TB data. You would keep one copy on your PC for access. A second copy on a USB drive for backups and a third copy at your parents (or other geographically separated) location. This covers you against hardware failure, theft, fire, etc.
