Should I upgrade my 550w psu for a 1070 ti?

There are a few of the "TS 550" units

If that's the exact model you have (P1-550S-XXB9), then it should be fine.

It's based on the SeaSonic S12II platform..... so it's a dated, group regulated design.

Not the "best" PSU by 2018 standards, but should still be ok.

If you want to go newer, you don't have to break the bank.

CX550 from Corsair - after rebates is <$30.

Or, all the units listed below by Jankerson are quality

That's not really a bad PSU, just older so if you want to upgrade to a GTX 1070Ti or GTX 1080 I would get something NEWER.

So generally speaking, the wattage is not any way a concern, but it's more so a problem concerning how old my unit is? Im trying to think long term and im pretty impressed with a couple of those psu's but however how long do you think that 550 can last me if i had decided to upgrade any other parts besides the gpu in a year or so.

It might be OK, made by Seasonic, but it's old technology.

If it was me and my money I wouldn't run a GTX 1070Ti or GTX 1080 on it.

You can keep the old one as a spare etc.

The outright wattage is fine - it's quality of the unit & it's age/how it's degraded over time.

The TS 550W shoudl still be "ok".

As for future upgrades, it really depends what the future holds. GPUs are typically the most power-hungry, and the trend is to be more efficient/consume less power - and 2+ GPU setups are becoming increasingly rare.

I would fully expect a quality 550W PSU to last you 7+ years with upgrades...... but exactly what'll happen in the GPU market is anybodies guess, although 250W+ GPUs are (hopefully) a thing of the past.
