Hello all,

I have recently installed noctua d15 on my intel i7-7820x.
I've used prime 95 for testing and once the test goes to 3200000 lucas something, the CPU temp goes up to 99 degrees Celsius. (after 7 minutes of starting the test). The heat-sink is cold and I'm wondering if this is normal? Room temperature 26.

Solution
What is your temperature at idle?
If the cooler is mounted well, you should see 10-15c. over ambient.
Are the fans spinning?
Did you use one of the low noise adapters?

I do not recall if the NH-D15 comes with a protective mylar film; if it does, you need to remove that.

How much paste did you use?
A small rice sized drop in the center will spread under heat and pressure.

Reread the instructions to insure that you used the parts for the lga2066 and not 1151.

Lastly, does your case supply sufficient airflow for the cooler to do it's job?
Take the case covers off and direct a house fan at the innards if you are in doubt.

Yes the fans are connected, I've checked and their rpm is at 1500 when CPU is hot. I am worried if I applied too little thermal paste, do you know if the heat sink should be hot when the CPU is at 90 degrees?

Yes, it should. And as geofelt said: "A small rice sized drop in the center will spread under heat and pressure."
Check your voltages and set everything to auto. I would also suggest a BIOS update. Please, also dust the computer and secure that the case is well ventilated, as air coolers are affected by airflow.

-temperature at idle is 40c (using CPUID HWMonitor, speed fan says 20c) (room temp 26c)
-yes the cooler is mounted well, the fans are spinning , full rpm when CPU goes over 60c
-no I dont use low noise adapters
-Yes I removed the protective mylar film
- I'm worried that I may used too little paste because the heat sink is cold even when CPU is at 90c. (5mm paste in center)
- yes just checked the parts are correct
-I'll try also using a house fan and see if the case is supplied with enough airflow. (using low noise fans for case)

My only question is, do you know if the heat sink should be hot when CPU is at high temperature like 90-99c?
Thank you

Update:
By applying the correct amount of paste I now have temps 35 at idle and 93 after running prime for 30 minutes. I've checked everything, I think NH-D15 can only keep intel i7-7820x it under 93 when using prime95. In real situations when CPU goes to 100% temp only goes up to 60 no matter how much time it stays at 100%.

Update: Replaced case fans (1000rpm) with new ones (1500rpm) now I have max up to 87 degrees CPU temps testing with prime.

Thanks a lot, I'll try reseting bios to auto, check the paste again and the airflow of the case.
