So I got two deals when I was shopping for a new computer. I want it to be fast, but also good for gaming. I have to choose between these two. I am building from scratch, and I can't switch a GPU with a CPU.
(I5-8400/GTX 780) or (I5-7600/GTX 1060 3gb)
Both have 1tb HDD and 8gb Ddr4 ram.

Have you got to choose one, or can you build one for yourself which would probably be better.
The reason being, is that the i5 7 series is now dead and the 8 series is current.
780 is older tech than the 1060...
4 GB ram is very low for a modern computer, 8 is really needed, but it will work with 4, just a bit sluggish.

I am building this myself, but the 1060 and the 780 come in bundles with the processors listed. I have 8gb ddr4. The deal for the 1060/CPU is $270, so I really can't complain in terms of price.

Where does he say that the PC has 4 GB RAM?

I would lean towards the i5 8400, because anything older than 8th gen is, as mentioned, dead. While the GTX 780 is older tech, the 8400 still will last for some time, and you can upgrade the GPU much more easily than you can upgrade the CPU. I would say go with the 8400 build, and upgrade the GPU when you feel it isn't giving good enough performance/when you have the budget.

A CPU would usually be called dead when it has very low potential life left, that is, it will become outdated very soon, or has already become outdated. The 7th gen i5 has 4 cores, and games are soon going to move towards six cores, which makes the 7th gen i5 'dead', because in the near future it will be unable to deliver good gaming performance.
