I want to get a Motorola modem/ router. I don't want to spend more money than I need but I also want to make sure I am getting one that will give me the best wifi connections, fastest speeds for gaming and Internet use. What should I be looking for when choosing a modem.

Don't buy a modem/router combo, IMO. Buy separate devices. Get a modem that is on the approved list for your ISP. Then you can use ANY router you want. If you want mesh WIFI, you can use a google router. Or an Asus router or a Mikrotik.

With that said, WIFI is bad for gaming. You want a wired connection. Ethernet, MoCA (coax) or powerline are all better than WIFI.

For DOCSIS the 3.1 are the newest and fastest. The 3.0 are pretty fast and they are much cheaper.
This part depends on what internet package you might get. If your plan is under 100Mbs 3.0 is plenty.
Not all ISP let you use your own and not all use DOCSIS.
You can get an all in one 3.0 for $60 with wifi and lan. I would recommend the modem only, but if you want to spend the least amount of money possible that is an option.

Can't agree more. Never get a modem/router combo unless it's a must. Always get a standalone modem and a separate router. It gives you a lot more flexibility if you want to upgrade your network to have faster speed or more features. And most routers on the market have more settings and features than the router part of a combo device.
