SAS RAID controller on a non-SAS MB?

Using a MB that doesn't support SAS, can one use a SAS RAID controller to run a SAS RAID?

So instead of getting storage device data from a drive port on the MB, the data would come through a card slot, ie: PCIe. Hmm! Are there non-card controllers? If so the data could come from that instead.

Thank you kindly

You can use a SAS disk controller in a non-SAS motherboard. That is pretty standard for servers. The problem may be getting drivers that will work with the O/S you are intending to use. You probably want standard Windows home or some desktop Windows version. There may not be drivers available for the SAS card. Verify drivers before purchasing.

Are you referring to the controller or(and) the drives? I'm assuming since the MB doesn't support SAS that everything would have to go through the controller, including installing drive drivers compatible for the controller or picking drives that use a standard that the controller support. How would this work?

It's what I'd use it the vast majority of the time with, but I may be using Ubuntu with it sometimes.

Not "drives" but "drivers" -- Software drivers that will let that RAID controller be accessed by the O/S. SAS controllers are "enterprise" devices. Consequently the manufacturers don't make software drivers that work with desktop O/S. Don't pick hardware without verifying that you can get the necessary downloads to support the O/S you intend to use.

Are you actually going to use SAS disks or SATA disks.

A SAS controller can also handle SATA disks, but not vice versa, so a lot of controllers are sold as SAS/SATA.

What controller card are you thinking of using?
Do you have device driver support for your intended OS?

Do you have the correct interface cables for the disks you intend to use.

I use SAS/SATA RAID cards on my home PCs without any issues.

I know what drivers are, but thank you for making sure. I was asking if the drivers you were referring to are for the controller or the drives, the latter as in hard disk drive.

Whichever is cheaper, for now SAS seem to be.

The cheapest decent one I can find.
It will have to be, I would use it on Windows 10 the vast majority of the time; sometimes I would use it on Ubuntu.

I have nothing concerning SAS ATM.
