Should I get more ram?

Hi,

My pc specs are:
gtx 1070 8gb
ryzen 5 1600
2 x 8gb ddr4 ram
250 gb ssd + 1 tb hdd
psu: cx750m
monitor: acer 2560x1440 60 hz
os: win 10 pro
antivirus: windows defender

I bought this motherboard + cpu + ram bundle a while ago on amazon:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B073FPPX3R/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I still have micro freezing/stuttering in games like Vampyr and Arkham Asylum (yes that old game). When I game I don't have any other program running. I have reinstalled the OS twice and all drivers are up-to-date.

So I would like to know first of all if getting more ram will fix the stuttering.

And if so would you advise that I get ram that match what I already have from the bundle in the link above? Or can I get a pair of matching ddr4 ram that is different from what is already in the bundle and install them on same colored slots?

Thanks!

16 Gb of RAM is absolutely enough. If anything, your problems might come from the fact that you bough rather slow RAM (only 2400), while Ryzen really needs faster to show its full potential. Or it's caused by software. Note that older games may be more prone to stuttering then new ones, as they are more likely to use only 1-2 threads.

OK. I meant not to increase performance but rather can I downclock the cpu and gpu or something like that just so the ram can keep up and so that stuttering/microfreezing goes away. I may also just buy some 3200 mhz ram but first I want to see if I can fix the issue by downclocking or something.

I see. So just because I didn't match the correct ram with the cpu I'm getting those stutters? Nothing else could be causing this aside from older games as you mentioned? Also could it be that Vampyr for example is badly optimized? I've read online about others experiencing the same thing.

Unfortunately, a *lot* of things can cause stuttering. RAM, CPU throttling from temperatures, poor drivers, bad port, failing GPU, not making a fresh install on Windows after a CPU/MB upgrade. The only thing you can really do is eliminate them one at a time.

I see. Sometimes I think of getting a console. The experience on those seem much more polished (no stuttering or microfreezing). I can deal with inconsistent frame rate on pc by capping the fps at 30 or lowering the graphics settings. But microfreezing has always been what's bothered me since I started gaming on pc in 2009. I later found out that one of the main causes was the graphics card not having enough ram. So I lowered the textures setting. But the microfreezing seemed to happen at any graphics preset, even with all settings turned to lowest. So I just ended up blaming devs for programming their game with console architecture (unified memory) in mind and not pc, resulting in bad optimized code running on pc. More and more I wonder what's the point of spending £400 on a new graphics card and £440 on a gaming motherboard, new cpu and ram and have a game look pretty but stutter/microfeeze every time you move the character around. This just ruins everything. Best just buy a console and have a better overall gaming experience.

It's hard to say what's going on, but what you're experiencing is not the normal experience with PC gaming.

Yeah I don't understand either. I've upgraded every single hardware that makes my pc, monitor included.
