[SOLVED] I5 7600 turbo boost

Hi,

I have a i5 7600. As far as I understand with all Cores utilised then there should be a potential turbo boost of 3.9ghz.

With all Cores active my cpu will alway max out at 3.68 ghz which it will run at most of the time. It will never go higher than 3.68. Is this normal or is there anything I can do to increase the cpu's turbo boost to get closer to 3.9ghz?

My cpu runs between 40-50 degrees C, I have the core voltage sent to auto in bios and it usually runs at 1.08 volts. I have my power settings set to performance.

Solution

I'd check for a new one nonetheless. My systems with 6600Ks and 6800Ks just got new BIOS updates a few months ago.
It is perfectly normal. The max effective boost only applies to one core. Then 3.8ghz applies to two cores, then i believe 3.7 for three and 3.6ish for 4. So if your under a load that uses all 4 cores, you'll only hit 3.6ish ghz.

You can work your way around this by enabling Multi-Core Enhancement (if your motherboard is has the higher end chipset), but keep in mind this is an overclock that boosts all your cores to 3.9ghz so run a stability test to make sure it's stable. (I recommend OCCT Large Data Set for about 4-5 hours)

From wikichips it seems to recon that with 4 cores active it should reach 3.9:

turbo frequency (1 core)
4,100 MHz (4.1 GHz, 4,100,000 kHz) +
turbo frequency (2 cores)
4,000 MHz (4 GHz, 4,000,000 kHz) +
turbo frequency (3 cores)
4,000 MHz (4 GHz, 4,000,000 kHz) +
turbo frequency (4 cores)
3,900 MHz (3.9 GHz, 3,900,000 kHz) +

https://en.wikichip.org/wiki/intel/core_i5/i5-7600

Which is what got me thinking that mine is running a bit low as I never get anywhere near 3.9

Ah ok I'm sorry, I didn't know the 7600 had a boost of 4.1ghz, i thought it was 3.9ghz.

Now that is definitely strange. Have you updated your BIOS?

Can you give me the link to the video?? I find it very strange that Intel would list the CPU at a x.x turbo frequency and a 65W TDP but it can't hit that turbo frequency with that tdp.

I think the intel xtu is for the K versions of the cpu so I am not sure how well it workings with mine. There is a turbo boost voltage slider bar set at 65w. I tried changing that upto 75 and ran the stress test but my turbo is still only maxing out at 3.68

Intel is weird and wanted oems to forcibly set power limits to ensure the chips' 65w TDP. However, the 8700 wasnt able to do this without outputting 65w of heat, reducing its clockspeed.
You have decent cooling perf, so im pretty sure it isnt the cooler.

Edit:
I can also link adored, but he is a bit annoying to the average viewer, so if anyone wants that video, just pm me.

I looked at the video and it doesn't look like I am being power throttled because changing powerslider to 85 watts doesn't do anything. But having seen the video I think I have found out what the problem is. On the right hand side of the intel xtu I have my active cores all set to 37.000x meaning all my cores are set too 3.7ghz max boost. so I have: 1 active core = 37.000x, 2 active cores = 37.000x, 3 active cores = 37.000x, 4 active cores = 37.000x. Going by wiki chips I need to some how change it too: 1 active core = 41.000x, 2 active cores = 40.000x, 3 active cores = 40.000x, 4 active cores = 39.000x.

Anyone know how and where I can get these values changed?

In my bio is changed my cpu core ratio from auto to manual and set the cores to 41,40,40,39 and it seems to be boosting correctly now. Interestingly though the 3.7ghz it was boosting to before was the max clock speed of my old i3 6100. I don't know if this is a coincidence or not. My bio does recognise it as an i5 7600 and I had flashed my bios before installing the new cpu as it needed an update for the mobo to recongise it. Could my bios still be using some of the spec of the old cpu as the auto settings?

I had the same problem, upgraded from i3-6100 to i5-7600, and the processor clock was max at 3.68ish Ghz. I updated the BIOS prior the upgrade, and the BIOS read the cpu correctly as i5-7600.
I decided to reflash the newest BIOS, and that seemed to do the trick. The cpu is now boosting correctly to 3.9 ghz at 4 cores.
