Connected to internet- but programmes cann't connect to internet. Have tried EVERYTHING touted as a solution.

So for the last 6 months certain programmes which require connection to internet no longer work, can connect or update e.g. Steam, Skype, Kindle, Spotify, Comodo, screensharing services. I’ve read a number of threads on here, and articles elsewhere, and tried virtually every solution to no avail, I shall list what I have tried that hasn’t found the cause of the problems:

Uninstalled/reinstalled wireless rivers
Tried to use “solve wireless/network problems”
Reset netshell IP
netsh winsock reset catalog
netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
netsh winsock reset catalog netsh winsock reset catalog
Ipconfig /flushdns
Adapter settings and disabled (uncheck) ipv6
Changed DNS settings to Google DNS
Disabled firewall
Reset Avast security settings to default
Done full, deep and root/boot virus scans
Disabled automatically detect LAN settings
Automatically Configure Settings unticked "Use Proxy Server".
Downloaded Malwarebytes, Rkill and other malware scanners, found nothing.

And still nothing.
The only thing I know happened when the computer was last free of this problem was that Windows 10 updated around Xmas. The problems started roughly after that, it may or may not be the cause but there’s nothing else I can think of. Ridiculously after windows decided to update, I couldn’t find a system restore point. One further bit of info, upon inputting
netsh winhttp show proxy
showed “Direct access” no proxy server

Can anyone help?

It appears something is only allowing web type of ports to pass to the internet...ie ports 80 and 443.

This tends to be a firewall but you say you disabled the firewall. Windows has different default firewall rules when it thinks a machine is directly on the internet rather than on a private lan network behind a router.

Not sure what to suggest. When the web browser works that means the almost all the network setting are correct. Broken DNS or routing issues would break everything not just non web based applications.

Something has to be blocking those ports. If you have a second pc that works it would eliminate things like your router causing it....still a router will not block stuff by default you normally have to actually do quite a bit of setup to filter traffic.

You also need to determine if all traffic on non standard ports is being block or just UDP traffic. You might be able to determine this by capturing data via wireshark and see if TCP sessions are being established on ports other than 80 and 443.

If it is not "router blocking" and not "firewall blocking"
I would suggest you have a corrupted Windows Install.
Any chance you can get a new HDD to just put in your machine and install windows 10 again, see if that sorts the problem out.
I suggest this, because you have literally gone through everything. I had a problem once where Bitdefender screwed up my network settings because of the way bitdefender worked and it took a long time to sort it out
But if you can do a windows reinstall on a spare HDD, then you will know for sure if it is WINDOWS and software on your computer or something else.

If you have a second hard disk in your computer, you could remove C drive and install windows on your second drive to try it out. This way you keep C drive perfectly as it was.

Yes I had suspected the update had messed something up. I may get a specialist to look at it as I have never physically installed a new HDD before myself. I have also just mooted buying a new laptop, to save me the hassle...

Installing Windows 10 is relatively easy and anyone who can use a screw driver can do it.
There are many many threads on here or over the web about how to install a new HDD and Windows 10. You don't need to pay someone to do it, but if that's the route you want to go, then do it that way. Do whatever you feel comfortable with.
I still think its a corrupted windows. I guess you already booted into Safe Mode with Network?

I may look into doing that myself yes. If say I installed clean windows onto HDD drive, can I set it to be the Windows which boots automatically then?

I have run in safe mode, but I wasn't sure what I should have been been doing- what should I be looking for/seeing in safemode?

If you boot into Windows Safe Mode with Networking - then you just open a browser and see if you can get on the net.

If you want to install a new windows, remove your old hdd with windows on it, and install on the other hard drive in your machine.

The first may work or may not, if it does then you know your windows has a problem

The second should work if it does, then you know your windows had the problem, if it doesn't then it is 100% nothing to do with windows then you got to look at hardware.
