So, i previously made a thread about should i upgrade cpu or ram, and the conclusion was both. Now i am looking to buy a intel i5 7400, 2x4gb Kingston 2400MHz CL15 DDR4 HyperX Fury DIMM RAM and now i am trying to decide, what motherboard to buy. Does the motherboard price impact performance? And when choosing a motherboard, do i only look at the cpu socket, or some other specs too?

Why buy last gen Intel? the i5 8400 is better and still requires DDR4 ram so you wont save any money.

For 7th gen you need a 1151 socket, for the newer 8th gen you need a 1151 (300) series.

As far as specific boards it really doesn't matter, just get one that has features you want and is within your budget.

Are you sure that i5 8400 uses a 1151 300 series socket? In Latvian internet store the 8400 is 20 euro cheaper then 7400 and uses a regular 1151 socket. Is 8400 really better then 7400 if its cheaper?

In perspective,i3 8100 performs between 7400-7500 and i5 8400 performs performs close to 7700/7700k. Officially you would need a 300 chipset to run coffee but I know for a fact that in Asian, tech shop often sell cheaper 100/200 board with modded bios or cpu pin mask to attract customers. Downside is that there are some potential harzard including fire and security when using mods.

the newer coffee lake cpu have more cores and a higher turbo speed.

it also has a larger cache over the older chips.
also the memory controller on the newer chips let you use faster ram by default.
on motherboard you have to look at the number of vrm on the mb if your going to game. mb with the z chips have over size vrm for over clockers. with the lower end b/h mb you have to google each model see if one or more have high doa or any issue with them.

so there are only 5 mobos that work for 8th gen cpus?

Edit: nevermind, i understood, now i am looking at motherboards that are 300 series. i really dont need all the features like usb 3.0 and stuff like that. can i absolutely cheap out and buy one of the cheapest motherboards?
