Hello,
I recently bought a new SSD because my HDD is way too slow.

Please, explain me step to step how i clone all my files (games, images, music etc...) from my 1TB HDD to my 1TB SSD

Do i have to disable superfetch before or after cloning? Is reinstalling before or after cloning recommended? How long does the cloning process take? Do i have to change anything in the bios before the cloning process?

Solution

Exactly like this:

Specific steps for a successful clone operation:
-----------------------------
Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives...

What cloning software do you have, might have come with the new ssd. Basically you boot the clone software and follow the wizard step by step, very easy.

Best practice is have a backup of everything you cannot lose (because things happen), you do not need to disable anything, no reinstall required before or after, the time required is based on how much data needs to be cloned, in other words it takes as long as it takes.

@t53186, My SSD arrives tomorrow (Samsung 860 EVO 1TB SSD) and i don't have a cloning software yet. I'll probably use the one from samsung.

@CaptainCretin, Do you recommended it over the samsung one?

Yes, use the Samsung software, it's the best around for cloning.

Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except the current C and the new SSD
Power up
Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive
Click the 'Clone' button
Wait until it is done
When it finishes, power off
Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD
This is to allow the system to try to boot from ONLY the SSD
Swap the SATA cables around so that the new drive is connected to the same SATA port as the old drive
Power up, and verify the BIOS boot order
If good, continue the power up

It should boot from the new drive, just like the old drive.
Maybe reboot a time or two, just to make sure.

If it works, and it should, all is good.

Later, reconnect the old drive and wipe as necessary.
Delete the 450MB Recovery Partition, here:

That's tricky. Either way, there will be some registry changes after changing.

I'd recommend changing it before, verifying everything is OK, then doing the clone operation.

Oh, nevermind. I checked my BIOS settings and it is set to AHCI by default.

Thank you all for helping me. Wish i could pick more than one solution :p
