So i have a 1080 and a i5 6600k right now overclocked to 4.7 ghz and the gpu is running 70-60% while cpu is 100% so my question: is it worth upgrading to the i7 8700k and a new motherboard to be future proof and get a rgb header and rgb lights (my motherboard rn doesnt have that) or do i go for the 8600k and keep my old motherboard to save money but be less futureproof and not able to use a rgb header.

Solution

Nope. It will not work. There is no such BIOS update. Socket looks like its same, but it's not. 6th and 7th gen use LGA1151, while 8th gen uses LGA1151v2. Same number of pins but not compatible with each other.

do you think then its worth going with a 7700k instead of the 8600/8700k

Not really. If 7700k would be much cheaper then it is now. With current prices it is better to buy 8600K or 8700K with new motherboard and sell your current one.
