Should I pout the ssd in the sata slot or pcie slot on the motherboard msi z370 gaming pro carbon ac

Your board has 2x M.2 that can do PCIe or SATA.

The 960 EVO is NVME so should work in either, so it *shouldn't* actually matter - but I'd opt for the primary slot (labelled M2_1)

I'm not sure if/what runs from lanes from the CPU vs the chipset.

Best case, the primary (M2_1) runs to the CPU and you could see a minor 'boost'. Likely/worst case would be both are chipset - where there would be no difference.

Either way, outside of benchmarks, there wouldn't likely be any noticeable difference anyway.

Yeah, the intent would be for the M2_1 to be your primary slot - so there's potential it's direct to the CPU.
