ASUS H270M-PRIME USB issue

For the last week I've been having a real issue with USB drives connected to my PC, when moving data they would just stop responding, then continue after 30 seconds or so. In the event viewer, there are numerous events relating to 'disk' an error was detected on device HardDisk7\DR23 during a paging operation, as well as 'UASPStor' reset to device RaidPort5. I have confirmed that all drives connected are healthy, and they are monitored anyway.

This only really started last week, which would be around the same sort of time I started using a Corsair Strafe keyboard. I wondered if the USB hub on that could be causing problems, so disconnected the cable for that, so only the keyboard was working. This has not made a difference. I have also installed the latest Intel ME, as well as the most up to date BIOS firmware.

The system configuration is as follows:

- ASUS H270M-PRIME
- i3-6100
- 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 (2 x 8GB)
- EVGA GTX 660 FTW 2GB
- Seasonic 520 watt PSU
- Samsung 850 EVO M.2 120GB
- WD10EZEX Data drive (Blue)
- WD6401AAEX Games drive (Black)

The internal drives backup to:

- WD20EZRX External backup (Green) - permanently installed, backup configured
- WD10JPVX External 2.5" backup (Blue) - manually drag and drop
- WD5000LPLX External 2.5" backup (Black) - plugged in weekly, backup configured

A couple of other things to mention is that all the external drives are fitted to ORICO enclosures, which are definitely high on my list of suspects. Secondly, I have indexing disabled.

Tonight, there have been points where the drives would do the normal pause, but before they came back up, all USB devices would drop out then back in again. Definitely lost as to what this could be. I've tried different sockets and cables, but to no avail.

This has now lead to UASPStor device resets on other ports now. I'm wondering if either the SATA controller is bad, or if there is an underlying software issue. Tonight when booting the machine, as soon as I got into Windows it told me a temporary paging file had been created. This is managed normally by myself, 1024MB - 2048MB, but now its nearly 3GB.

The OS is Windows 10 Pro x64, 2018 build and is up to date. This was updated from 8.1 in around March time.

I have diagnosed the fault to be with the USB 3.0 controller. Unfortunately Intel don't provide a specific driver for USB 3.0 controllers above Windows 7. I have uninstalled the controller and restarted the machine to find the problem still exists. Think I'll scrap Windows 10 and go back to 7. Never used to have any of these problems there.
