Asus Sabertooth z97 mark 2 red light

Hey all,

So my home built rig decided not to boot today. All the fans whirred to life when I push the "on" button but they continued to spin full tilt instead of spooling down after a few seconds and I get no live screen, not even bios. Sometimes the system will shutoff and then turn itself back on, resuming the previously described state, other times not.

I hadn't opened it up in some time so I took the time to purge any dust buildup with the air can & vacuum combo, didn't fix it. I've reseated all power connections. I've reseated the ram chips. I even performed a bios flashback as there was a bios update released this past April. Nothing has worked yet.

I do have the red light illuminated between the ram chips and cpu socket, I don't believe it's normally on but hindsight isn't 20/20 here. Other folks who reported this red light were more likely to have just built the system or made some other modification. Do you all reckon I've had a part fail? I built this machine in early 2015

ASUS Sabertooth z97 mark 2
Intel core i5 4690k
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (I have two sets of these that fill all 4 ram slots)
MSI GeForce GTX 1080 8 GB

Solution
The CPU_LED continuously lit red does indeed indicate a problem with your CPU and POST (power on self test) will not continue until rectified. Hence no output to monitor.
As your RAM was working before then I would assume there is an issue with the processor if clearing CMOS or a Bios flash does not work.
I would pull the CPU and RMA the unit if still under warranty which I believe is 3 years.
Hi jdswider

Could be a memory mismatch as you have differing kits.
Have you tried with just a single kit 2x4 in the A2 and B2 slots.?
Clear CMOS and try this to see if it will boot.

Which LED lights up on the MB.? You have DRAM_LED just above the 24pin socket and CPU_LED at base of and left of DIMM slots.

Also test your DIMM modules with Memtest86 to eliminate the possible malfunction of a module.

Please report back.

Hey Meanmachine,
I dug up the manual and it is in fact the CPU_LED that is lighting up. I did go ahead and try out each 2x4 kit individually (but I don't have another working computer to run Memtest86) pulling the CMOS battery each time, no change.

This is an aside to the initial question but I thought it you bought a second set of RAM chips and it was an exact match to your first (type, speed, brand even) you were good, is that not true? Mine had been running for 3 years in that configuration.

Even if this is a RAM issue I should still be able to get to the BIOS screen, right? This is the first time my machine hasn't Posted since I made the initial build.

Thanks for your help, unfortunately the CPU is out of warranty by like 10 months, yay silicon RNGesus. Time to Microcenter some new guts.
