What do you use this system for?
Unlikely you'd see the difference between an m.2 NVMe drive and a SATA III drive, either m.2 or 2.5" format.

If you want the boot times and system performance to benefit you will need to either move your windows installation onto the SSD or install a fresh copy.

If you want to move what you have you'll need to make sure it fits first. My personal method to migrate the OS to SSD is to install Aomei Partition assistant (free) and use the "Migrate OS to SSD" wizard. It's fairly simple to use and I've had good success with it. Afterwards you need to change the boot priority in the BIOS so it will boot from the SSD.

Only fast M.2 SSDs (like Samsung 960/970) would make any difference during normal usage. Slower ones are barely above SATA SSD speeds. Samsung and some other ones come with own SW for cloning but any other SW like my favorite Macrium Reflect free would also do same job. It takes only few minutes anyway.
