Totally agree, at least two backups of everything on two physically separate hard drives. When one of them eventually fails, replace it immediately.

I keep three backups on three externals - - - but I must confess I keep them all in the same room all the time, so not as totally prepared as I should be.

Cloud storage can be one of the multiple geographic locations I referred to. But it depends on the upload bandwidth available. If you have 5Mbit or similar, then cloud storage can be impractical because of the upload times. 100GB of family movies and photos takes days to upload.

Redownloading can be impractical if you have slow internet also. Just because it can be downloaded, doesn't mean that backups aren't a better answer.

But if you have gigabit up and down bandwidth then use multiple cloud backups. I do use Amazon glacier for my off-site storage. And yes, I do encrypt prior to uploading.
