What to look for a good PSU

Solution

The S12 and M12 are decent budget units, They have been around awhile but overall they are a good budget option.
450w is sufficient for a GTX1060.
I have no problem overprovisioning a PSU a bit. Say 20%.
It will allow for a stronger future graphics card upgrade.
It will run cooler, quieter, and more efficiently in the middle third of it's range.
A PSU will only use the wattage demanded of it, regardless of it's max capability.

Perhaps of more importance is the quality of the unit.
The two you listed are inexpensive, but not highly regarded.
Here is one list of quality:

I might recommend the Seasonic focus 450/550w units:

Those Seasonic are out of my price range unfortunately, and the link from linus forum you provided says that this cooler master v3 is on a Tier 1 psu which is said to be best. So I'm thinking about getting it, is there anything else I should or some other PSU i should look up for ?

I'm having a hard time finding any information about this particular PSU. But that's one thing that you should always get a second opinion on. Always research the OEM. A lot of times you can find ones that are based off Seasonic or Superflower platforms for less money than if you bought the actual brand. I don't know if that particular PSU is one of those but I'll check my sources and see.

No that's just advertising copy. I'm looking for reviews that tear the PSU apart to tell whether it's good or bad. I'll check with the other mods and see what they know. I know I would *NOT* buy the EVGA 600W - those are very low end HEC units that tend to be housefire quality.

Find a way to buy a top quality psu.
It will last for several generations of builds.

A cheap PSU will be made of substandard components. It will not have safety and overload protections.
If it fails under load, it can destroy anything it is connected to.
It will deliver advertised power only at room temperatures, not at higher temperatures found when installed in a case.
The wattage will be delivered on the 3 and 5v rails, not on the 12v rails where modern parts
like the CPU and Graphics cards need it. What power is delivered may fluctuate and cause instability
issues that are hard to diagnose.
The fan will need to spin up higher to cool it, making it noisy.
A cheap PSU can become very expensive. Do not buy one.

Ah no.

The V Series they are talking about is the Platinum Rated ones, their high end model.

The one you linked to is the burn down your house Tier 7 garbage.

Yes any of those units are good. The M12 and the S12 are essentially the same unit, only difference is modular vs non modular. The Focus is a newer version of the M12. So either of those are what you should buy.

The Seasonic M12ii EVO 620W is OK if you need something now.

The S12ii / M12ii are mediocre, please avoid. Group regulated with crappy protections.

A good PSU needs to deliver stable voltages, all the time, have working protections, and is built well on a good design and quality components.

The Cooler Master MWE 650 is better. But not the low wattage versions, for some reason they are group regulated.

You only need 400w. Just make sure it’s a good quality PSU.
Look for the Be Quiet Pure Power 10, be Quiet System Power 9, Corsair CXM/CX grey label, Coolermaster MasterWatt (not lite), FSP Hexa 85+, Xilence Performance A+, Corsair Vengeance, Cooler Master GM.
Those are generally good value power supplies, depending where you live and what’s available to you.

I don't feel like going unit by unit but that power supply tier list is terrible. Like throw a dart at some names on the wall to choose tiers bad. First unit in tier 1 the Aerocool Project 7. Should be solid 10s right?

An 8.2. The unit and I quote: " This unit did not clear Platinum at any time, so a full point comes off there." And they put that in tier 1. :(

Because they are older units, they won't have the greatest numbers out there. But those units are far from fire starters. And looking online, it's hard to find something great at a 60euro budget. If he can swing one of these units they probably are the best for his money. It would be awesome if great units were cheap for everyone, but sometimes you do have to buy the best you can afford.
