I'm building a desktop pc and I want to use X8DTL-IF from supermirco is it mandatory that I use a Xeon rather than the cheaper i7-920?

Solution
You need xeon for dual cpus as they have extra to communicate with each other. There's also different quad or higher cpus as they have even more tech to communicate with each other. The 5500's and 5600's were for dual. The 6500's and 7500's are max 4 and 8 cpus and should work too but aren't stated. They would cost more anyways.

Thank you very much I was wanting to save a couple of bucks but Ill gladly use some Xeons being that I can get 6 cores per processor for about 30 bucks.

Mainly a powerful yet stable workstation but Ill also be playing a few games on there (ie. Fallout 4 / 76 or Elder Scrolls)

A workstation built with that motherboard and dual Xeons would have its hat handed to it by most current Intel or Ryzen CPUs.
For games, even more so.

Yes I do understand that it would be and upgrade as far as I'm concerned sense I have an i5-2300 and be much cheaper then buying an i7-8700k

EDIT: I also have DDR3 ECC RAM from an older Skylah rig I off EBay for $50

OK, just verifying.
I've seen far too many people that see "server", and think "uber performance".

That's true I do think though the 12 cores from the xeon x5650 I found will be a major improvement on the 4 cores given by the i5.
