New router suggestions

Recently, I found out that I am getting 20 Mbps from an old router that I have had for about 5 - 7 years. We got Verizon FiOS recently and it is supposed to give you at least 54 Mbps of speeds. Currently, I have an ISP provided modem/router combo. My dad put me up to the task of contacting different forums to see what people recommend and why. Things like how many bands should we have in the router, singles, double, or triple. Recommended range for our house? Things like that. Our router currently can only put 20 Mbps through and nothing else, not even on the wired connections we have in our house. We have a medium sized house 3 floors (Top, middle, and basement). Any suggestions on what I should be looking for in the router we decide to get?

EDIT: We are currently running 4 Iphones, 3 PCs, an Xbox One and 2 cable boxes. We do not have DSL in our area, just COAX.

If you have FIOS, you have a few questions to answer. Do you TV or phone from FIOS in addition to internet? If so, then you have to use the FIOS router to get full functionality. BUT, you don't have to use the FIOS WIFI. Just turn off the WIFI on the FIOS router and add your own WIFI source.
