Hold out or get a new CPU?

I am currently using an i5-6600K, delidded and overclocked to 4.8 at 1.38v. But with the new AAA game titles coming out, its starting to show its age, paired with a GTX 1080.

Do i hold out for another year or two, or just get Intel's 8th/9th gen parts/Ryzen 2nd Gen parts? If so, do recommend the CPU as I am having trouble deciding. Thanks in advance :)

What resolution are you using? Considering a 4770k/4790k can run anything @ 1440p at max settings, im a bit surprised you're having trouble having a GTX 1080, regardless, I think it really depends how bad is your gameplay experience at the moment, if not good enough, i'd upgrade, as I said, you'll be able to play anything at @ 1440p max, some titles in 4k as well but not on max setttings, just know that in beforehand.

In my case i'm still using a 4770k + GTX 980, theres no game it cant run on top settings @ 1080p, so i'll def wait for next generations.

The IPC of 6th gen processors vs. 8th gen processors is not very different.
8th gen 8350k/8600k/8700k can oc to around 5.0
That is not a very big boost.
What you DO get is more threads if you can use them.
Today, it is mainly the multiplayer games that can use more than 4 threads.
For those games, 8600K with 6 threads or 8700K with 12 would be a nice upgrade.
Ryzen will oc to about 4.0-4.3 which is not so good if you need fast cores. But, it is very good if you need more threads for multitasking batch production work or multiplayer games.

If you are having no performance issues now, I suggest you wait until you find a game that does not play well.
Then, decide if the game needs faster graphics, faster cpu, or more threads.

My panel is 1080p, but i always play with DSR at 1440P. Since I do some media creation (photoshop, video editing) I do notice that at times it feels sluggish. On AAA titles such as FC5, or FFXV the CPU definitely shows its weakness. Boot drive isnt an issue, I am using an Adata SX8200 so it wont bog down the CPU anyways. I think the extra threads on the 4770K is a big boost to your framerates, despite my higher CPU clocks.

So, based on your explaination, which one would suit my needs? 8600K or 8700K ftw? I also do some light content creation too.

The 8600K overclocked is almost as good as the 8700K overclocked. I would only get the i7 if you plan on rendering or streaming.

Some say not negligible in gaming. I don't game, though, so I don't care much there, personally. But I wonder what other tasks the faster per core of intel helps with.

I am deciding between a 2700x now or wait until later this year and get intel 9th generation, assuming it comes out this year. I am not waiting until next year.... I have bought parts since last November and would be eating up my warranties for too long waiting.

Main reason I have doubts with ryzen is because of how bad of RAM issues people had with the first gen. I have 32 gb of g.skill RAM optimized for intel, so I hate to risk it. Most say it will work fine, but I don't know.... it didn't work well for people last year apparently. My RAM is samsung b die, btw, but it's CAS 15, not 14.

9th Gen is next year
As for Ram, just check what motherboard supports your Ram - and all the "ram" problems you mentioned were pretty much sorted within a few months. People seem to forget that when Intel releases new chipsets they also have problems.

Also if you don't game, then the Ryzen makes even more sense, more cores, more threads. Faster by quite a lot in most benchmarks.

But most everyday activities people perform use only 1 core. I would edit sometimes, but not often, probably. Still leaning ryzen, though, because I don't want to fool with a cooler and thermal paste myself.

As for the RAM, NONE of the motherboards that are for ryzen list my specific RAM. In fact for one x470 board I read the QVL for, it only listed a single 1 RAM kit of 3200. lol. (from all manufacturers combined, a whole one listed 3200 kit).

Also, as far as 9th gen, nobody really knows for sure on that and even if it's a coffee lake refresh, it still could be considered 9th gen, by intel. If, on the other hand, there WON'T be an 8 core intel mainstream one this year I might as well buy now. There are good deals on the 2700x and some x470 mobos.
