I've spent some time putting together a desktop build, and would really appreciate some feedback (I haven't built a PC before).

I'm a student, so I'm trying to make something that fits the following criteria:

  • ■ No more than £500
    ■ Small form factor (so it's easy to move around and doesn't take up too much space)
    ■ Ready to upgrade (DDR4, compatible with new CPUs, etc.)
    ■ Not a supercomputer, but good enough to run MMOs and most games on low to mid settings
As far as RAM is concerned, I'm essentially just planning to pick the cheapest 2x4GB set I can find when I go to purchase the parts.

Alternative version in a slightly larger case: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/cJM2kd

Thanks kids,
James

Thanks - any particular reason for the changes?

Better performance. The I3 8100 is a better cpu than the X950 and the 1050 is slightly better on average that the 560. Semi modular PSU will help with cable managment which in turn usually helps air flow.

Yeah you had an Athlon 950 in there which is dog slow.

The i3 8100 is way better as is the gtx 1050.

To do amd you want the ryzen 1200.

No. If you really want to stick with AMD don't go with anything less than a Ryzen 1200(the i3 8100 is still faster but not by nearly as much). The X4 950 is based on a 6 yr old architecture and is a poor choice especially for a gaming rig.
