Is it possible to use 1 4gb stick of ram with 1 16gb stick of ram?

I recently run into the problem of not having enough memory and i wanted to go up to 2*8gb sticks of ram however, as sad as it is, can't really afford it. I know running ram in a single stick can cause stutters so i'm thinking of getting a single stick which i have found to be much cheaper and pairing it with one of my other sticks. but i have heard 20gb of ram can make your performance worse, just wondering if it is possible to do and if so worth doing.

thanks

If you were able to get a 16gb stick and a 4gb stick to work together, 12gb would be operating in slower single channel mode.
That, by itself is really not so bad. Even if your new 16gb stick had to run by itself, having 16gb in single channel mode is likely to be much better than running with only 4gb.

All that said, I think it unlikely that you would get two such very different sticks to work properly together.

What is your plan B if they do not work together?

I did a quick check, and I found little difference between a 2 x 8gb DDR4 kit and a single 16gb stick.
Forget speed, and look for a 2 x 8gb kit that is compatible with your motherboard.
Its possible, but there is a fairly large chance it wont work properly. Only RAM sold in kits is guaranteed to work together.
You can use a single stick by itself if you have to, it wont run in dual channel so the performance will be a little slower, but its not going to be any better using the 4GB stick alongside it.
