So I have windows 10 running on an old 1 TB hard drive and have a new 500 GB SSD. My question is: Am I able to transfer just the OS over to the SSD to use as my boot drive, and if so, how? I don't need any other files off the HDD and plan on starting off with a clean wipe of it anyhow. If anyone has done this or knows if its possible I would appreciate a well informed answer.

If you don't need any files from the old drive, just do a clean install on the new SSD.

In theory, yes...kinda.

You would need a clone program that will allow you to do so to a drive with different size.

Go into the HD and delete everything except your OS, then clone.

I think it's a not good plan, but can't see why it wouldn't work.

No.
There is no function or application that will transfer "just the OS" to a different drive.

How much total consumed space is on your current drive?
What constitutes that space?

I think he's wanting to split out the OS from the rest of the stuff on the drive.
Typical request.

Can't happen.

Well, if you don't have a valid license key for it, that's a different thing.
The license from that prebuilt system is probably null and void on a new system.

You can install Win 10, and leave it Unactivated. It will run (mostly) just fine.

I have a long running test of Win 10 in exactly this situation, just to see what happens.
Installed in a VM on Dec 8 2016. Over 18 months. Still running exactly as it did when new.

A sometime appearing nag text at bottom right.
No customization of the desktop or taskbar.
That's it. It runs just fine otherwise.

It appears randomly, on top of everything in the Z layer.

But that's ALL it does.
Previous Windows (7/8/8.1), would nag, and then shut off after 30 days.
That screencap was after over a year of operation.
