I7-8086k cpu temp when gaming?

I have just got an I7-8086k and the temperatures it is hitting are as follows.

40C when idle
65C when gaming (Tested with Total War: Warhammer 2, Which is fairly Cpu heavy)
78C when running a Prime95 stress test. (78c was the peak temperature, It averaged around 76c over a 3 hour test)

My Gpu a gtx 1080 ti is hitting 82c when gaming but i believe that is fine as they tend to run a little hot anyway

I just wanted to know if the temps that my CPU is experiencing is safe. I had heard that the newer processors do run a little hotter but i just want to double check.

Thanks in advance.

The only thing I wanted to add to the thread is to explicitly say this: Graphics cards are designed to run hot. It's not uncommon for GPUs to run in the 80C range or warmer under load, especially in the summer when ambient temperature in the house/building are high OR you're using AMD cards. CPUs *should* run cooler than GPUs. The exceptions being if you have something wrong with the CPU cooler, or you're running certain AMD processors with an aggressive overclock.

In general, if your CPU is running in the 80C-85C area, you're *technically* within specifications, but you might want to look at upgrading to a different cooler or reseating and changing your thermal compound. If your GPU is running in the 90C area, you're still within...

On behalf of Tom's Moderator Team, welcome aboard!

At the top of each of our Forums you will see a group of "Stickies", which are informative Threads that are permanently "stuck" in place, so they're always available as reference material for everyone's benefit. Near the top of the CPU's Forum you will see: Intel CPU Temperature Guide - http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1800828/intel-temperature-guide.html

Your Core temperatures are OK, but keep in mind that Core temperatures increase and decrease with ambient temperature. "Standard" or normal is 22°C or 72°F.

Q: What is your ambient (room) temperature?

Although Throttle temperature for the i7 8086K is 100°C, Core temperatures above 85°C are not recommended.

Here's the operating range for Core temperature:

Core temperatures below 80°C are ideal.

Once again, welcome aboard!

These are fine for this CPU. The newer Intel CPUs are already on the warm side and you're running a CPU that can hit 5 GHz out of the box. If this were an FX-8350, I'd tell you repent sins and pray, but this is normal, though obviously not amazing.

NOTE: As a rule, AMD graphics cards run warmer than most NVIDIA cards, because they use more electricity. This is something to consider when purchasing a card or when monitoring your system.
