Dropped laptop, Win 7 won't boot, live *nix will

I unfortunately dropped my laptop from my backpack, although it was slow, the zipper taking what seemed like 10 seconds until the fall (I didn't realize what was happening); I'm assuming there was a good angle, almost parallel to the ground before it dropped, the bottom of my backpack a little more than 3' off the ground.

I can manage to get past right the logging window, then the screen become black and I can move the cursor but nothing more then eventually I get a BSOD. Only 2 times, before and graphic interaction (so only text to that point), there was a warning that a special test was strongly suggested but it was shown quickly and I couldn't manage to get it started (test); thinking the message would be shown again, I didn't note the name of the test but it was something I've never seen before (I'm assuming something only suggested when things go really bad).

The dropping has been just a bit over a month ago. I was convinced the rest of the hardware was at fault since my keyboard already goes bad and my display need to be supported by something if I want any upward angle, the hinge being pretty bad. Using live *nix with a couple other systems, the idea creeped into me that it might be data source (HDD) related. I tried a live *nix and it went well.

Does someone have an idea what was the strongly suggested test and how can I manage to have it run on the dropped laptop HDD? Is there other way to repair the HDD? I tried Windows diagnostic mode (or whatever it's called when you don't boot normally and it gives you the choice between that and booting normally), all tests available to me and none fixed the problem.

Thank you kindly

Also I can access the HDD content from another system so it's not completely useless.
