PSU possibly blew up two motherboards?

Hi everyone,

Parts:

  • ■ EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G1, 80+ GOLD 650W
    ■[MSI X370 Pro Carbon
    ■Intel 8700k
    ■ GSkill 3200 RGB 8gb x 2.

The first time assembled, immediately when turning on a "pop" sound occured, followed by some smoke. Everything remained on, and after turning it off, re-assembling the PC and checking for damage, I turned it on again to find that the motherboard's Ez debug LED is stuck on the CPU. I turn in the motherboard to get RMA'd, wait about a month, get a new motherboard from MSI, and install it into the rig.

The second time around, everything turned on fine and I could get into the bios. After about 5 minutes of being on, however, the computer just shut off unexpectedly. I then tried to reboot but could not get the system to turn on. After inspecting the power cord, PSU and its connectors, I was able to get the system to turn on followed.. again.. by a loud "pop" followed by smoke. I immediately turn off the system, inspect everything, re-assemble and inspect, and turn on again. Same behavior: the motherboard's Ez Debug LED is stuck at CPU.

I'm at a loss. I thought the first time around the issue was the motherboard, but it seems to me now that the PSU is blowing up motherboards. Does the above behavior seem consistent with a faulty PSU? Is the only option now to buy a new PSU and new motherboard?

Thanks everyone

I am lucky enough to have built a lot of machines over the decades so I have spare PSU's around (Good ones) incase things like that happen.

you should have tested your new motherboard with another PSU bcoz motherboard doesnt blow up by itself it is PSU causing this short cicuit
