On-board display working, but no signal from GPU.

Having an issue with a EVGA GTX 980 on a Asus Maximus VI Formula MB. Had everything working for my buddy with a fresh set of drives and a new install of Win 10. I shipped the tower to him, and on receipt the GPU appears to have gone out.

Initially he couldn't get any signal from the GPU or the On-board graphics, but after some guidance we at least got the display up with the On-board graphics which pointed to an issue with the GPU. I had him move the card to a new PCE-i slot, and then we couldn't get anything from either HDMI port.

It seems like we're close to figuring the situation out, and I don't think the card died. I haven't trued to walk him through selecting a PCE-i slot as the primary VGA in the BiOS yet as he it's all honestly a bit over his head. I wanted to see what options we have. It seems like a good sign that the On-board graphics wasn't displaying after we switched the slot the card was in. Any ideas?

We did clear the BiOS. There is a button on the back that looks like a refresh symbol, and also the memokay button. That reset the board for sure. I've delt with some battry issues on this particular board before, and yes the battery is in a terrible location. I really don't want to have my buddy try to get that battery out if we don't have to.

Not sure why, but after a reset and a day of the PC being 0lugged in we decided to give it another go, and what do you know, it works!

All signs point to the PCE-i slot dying. Once we plugged the GPU into the upper slot we stopped being able to get the monitor to display from the motherboard. This was a good sign because, that meant the computer was detecting the GPU. So we plugged the HDMI into the card, and bingo it was all good!
