R6300v2 with faster modem still gives old download speed

I just got the new modem from Charter to upgrade my internet dl speed from 60 mbps to 200 mbps. When I connect my computer directly to the modem with an Ethernet cable I get the full 200 mbps. However, via wifi on the R6300v2 router, I'm still restricted to 60 mbps even though the router is supposed to be capable of 1 gig mbps speeds over wifi. Is there a setting I must change in the router to get the faster speed on my wifi or what?

Solution

Yes, the router may use a different SSID for the 5Ghz radios.

Wifi has potential faults; Frequency (2.4 or 5GHz), band (N, AC or older like G etc) along with issues with distance and obstructions.

Not enough info to give a definitive answer at this point, unfortunately.

Where is the router in relation to the computer?

What Wifi card do you have in the computer?

If you look at the data sheet for the R6300 v2 -- http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/datasheet/en/R6300v2.pdf You will see that on page 1 where is says "450+1300Mbps" it has an footnote -- down at the bottom of page five it says "Actual data throughput and wireless coverage will vary"
but if you get 60Mbit throughput it sounds like your device (laptop, cell phone, tablet) is using the 2.4Ghz frequency and is only able to use a single radio.

To get maximum throughput you need to use 5Ghz.

Thanks for your fast response, Barty. Band AC. At 2.4 GHZ is set for up to 217 Mbps, for 5 GHZ up to 1300 mbps. Distance approx. 20 feet in next room with 1 wall between router and computer. Wifi card in computer is Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165.

Name of the Wifi device on my computer is Intel Dual Band Wireless AC 3165, so doesn't that mean it's capable of 5GHZ dual?

Whatever the link speed that Windows shows you in the network status, you get about 1/2 that for throughput.

Since this sounds like a laptop based on the WIFI card, verify that you get the full 200mbit with a wired connection to the router.
