I'm pulling my hair out over here.

I started a build today with the Ryzen 5 2400g and a MSI B350 Tomahawk motherboard. The attachment of the Wraith Spire cooler was weird. I had to apply very much pressure and then the screws started making a really weird sound (possibly from the springs) when I turned them. It did not attach easily and I got a little worried because I thought maybe it was too tight and the sound of the screws creaking really scared me.

I started it up with no problem but I thought the fan sounded too loud and I was worried about the amount of pressure. I took the cooler off with GREAT difficulty and now I cannot reattach it. The screws will turn but they will NOT descend or retract.

Additionally the pre-applied thermal paste (it was already on the stock cooler, I did not apply) is spilling over the side a little bit and I'm worried about that.

What do I do? The MSI Tomahawk does not have a back plate. Why are the screws making this weird sound and refusing to descend? Please help and tell me what to do.

Solution
Am4 B350 Motherboards come with a stock back plate, you need to use that to mount the stock cooler. If your board didn't have one its either dangling in the case when you took the brackets off, because without backplate the brackets wont screw in place.
Also regarding cooler mount turn the screw in reverse direction and when attached and turned it will just stop to turn when properly attached. Also tighten the screws in a diagonal pattern.
You need to re-apply thermal paste since you removed the cpu cooler.
