Cpu clock speed going to 0.8 Ghz when gaming

Hey guys,

I have an Alienware 17 r2 laptop that I've had for about 3 years.
Cpu: Intel core i7-4710HQ @2.5 Ghz, turbo boost 3.5 Ghz
Gpu: Gtx 980m
I recently started getting major fps loss when playing games, mostly Fortnite.
I downloaded OCCT and Hwinfo64 to see what was going on and I've noticed that my Cpu speed goes down to 0.8 Ghz randomly when i am playing Fortnite.
Temperatures all look fine. Cpu temp is in mid-80s and Gpu temp is in mid-70s.

With the settings I'm playing at I should be at a constant 100+ fps but its at 40-50 fps.

Does anyone know whats causing this and how to fix it?

CPU Temps at mid-80's are fine? Goodness that's the problem right there lad! You're experiencing thermal throttling possibly due to a built-in offset, or perhaps a poor paste-job from the factory. Have you tried dusting/cleaning out your laptop? This thread should cover your issue quite nicely. http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/aw-15-cpu-thermal-throttling-at-70%C2%B0c-i7-4710hq-970m.777481/

that temp is actually alright for R2, but sadly the laptop was built with a crippled cpu and it will throttle no matter what you try.

if you do a bit of research on this matter you can find that almost all people who own this machine has encountered this problem, and afaik there's no way in fixing it.

I have the exact same laptop as you, and I feel your pain.

What you can try is to use XTU or throttlestop to try and fix your problem.

As a matter of fact your laptop might have actually never gone into turbo-boost even if its on in the settings by default.
