I currently have a system (FX 4300 and RX 460) I am planning to be getting a new system (Ryzen 1600 and RX 580) How hard would it be to take the HDD I have now and move it over to the new system without deleting everything I have on it, because I have games and stuff that I do not want to have to reinstall.

You may get away with it but in most cases Windows won't run properly when it's moved (even Win10). Everything may seem to be hunky dorey at first, but what often happens is days or weeks later all manner of errors keep popping up, and this endless frustration forces you to reinstall.

Existing Windows installation on that HDD won't run on new PC , and games & any other software you previously installed on that HDD will have to be reinstalled if you move it over to your new PC.

So bottom line is there are no guarantees, you have to try it and see if you're one of the lucky ones.

You can keep your old HDD without reformatting, but with change of motherboard you will have to reinstall OS.
That means - you will either need another drive to install OS or repartition your current drive for that.

And not all games/software can be transferred this way. Some of it will need to be reinstalled.

I recently did just this so let me spell it out for you, it can be done but it is slightly more complex than just "cloning your disk".

How to:

1. Attach the disk for the new machine to your old machine, can be USB attached (but if you go that route do use USB 3.1 otherwise forever it will take you.)

2. get disk cloning software (I prefer reflect by Mcaurium.)

3. now here's the tricky bit.... on your old machine you will need to preinstall the Drivers for the new machine. Since you are going AMD to AMD (Granted AM3 to AM4) this will be fairly easy.

I went AM2+, Nvidia to AM4 and AMD and all went swimmingly now for well over 9 mos, but I digress...

since the RX460 and the 580 use essentially the same driver, you are just going to have to install the drivers for your new MOBO. download them from your Mobo's manufacturer website and just really do the chipset and raid drivers. If your not in raid then just the Chipset.

Install them...

4. Now clone your disk.

5. When the clone is finished, install it in the new system, and power it up. It's going to do a ton of finding new hardware bla, bla, bla and probably take a very long time. No worries, walk away and let it do its thing. when it's done login, and walk away again, it'll do som more cleaning up. when it finishes reboot. It'll now com up much faster this time.

6. Oh wait you'r not done yet. Now you got to do clean up.

You can either do this through windows by opening a command prompt (Elevated admin) and typing the following:

SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1

then from that same command prompt run DEVMGMT.MSC Select View and Show Hidden Devices.

Look through all the listed devices, and the ones that are greyed out, right click on and select uninstall.

There are good-docs on this just google Phantom Devices.

7. once you are done here, Reboot again.

8 Uninstall any Software specifically for you Old system (Raid Expert comes to mind if you were doing raid.)

9 After you have Rebooted, go to AMD.COM and load and install the latest Radeon Drivers for your card, Reboot, Load the Latest System drivers for your Mobo, and any Raid Stuff, Raid Expert2, Raid Drivers ETC if you were using this. Reboot between each of these things.

And now you're done.
