High ping in video games (i think only Minecraft)

Basically, I get high ping in ( i am quite sure, only minecraft ). It is quite strange.

- only SOMETIMES it happens
- When it happens, it occurs about 5 seconds after joining a new server
- The new server can include rejoining the old IP, joining a new IP, or switching to a different part of the server.
- When it doesn't happen when i join a server, it sometimes doesnt happen for a few hours but sometimes it happens in 30 minutes after joining.(also when this lag occurs, it starts doing 5 second then lag thing i mentioned earlier)

- It is usually 80% of the time it does the 5 second then lag ans 20% fine then occassionally lag , but recently, it's been 50/50 (which is just luck i am assuming)

-Rarely, the lag goes away but it comes back soon after

-Lastly, it is ALWAYS between 350-450 MS of lag with sometimes up to 500 ms, but normal ms is ~90 ms

If it really only is Minecraft, then you have to think what is unique about Minecraft.

1. The Minecraft servers that you are playing on are laggy. This is the most likely thing. Do others on the same server also see lag? Are you connecting to servers that are far away from you?
2. Minecraft is a java game and some security software is doing extra checks or you have an odd setting or something. A google search will give you some suggestions about optimum settings.
3. You are running some game specific mods that are increasing lag.

Stuff like your network, your ISP, etc are the same for Minecraft and other games ... You should see a consistent problem if they were the issue.

So I found out that it is not just with Minecraft. I tried Fortnite and it lagged.
I will answer your quesitons too.
1. The Minecraft servers are not what is laggy, like i said it doesnt lag until 5 seconds after i join. Also, in the server list, it says i am getting 63 ms, which is the ms i get when i join until the 5 seconds pass.
2 + 3 basically what i said before, I found out that fortnite also lags, and also the 5 second thing proves these to be false. The fact that it is random (sometimes the lag doesnt happen) proves these are not the reasons. Also I haven't heard of a mod that makes ping higher; mods might make fps slightly worse but I haven't heard of ping getting worse

Ok, so not just Minecraft ... so 1,2, and 3 are irrelevant. So we look at your computer, your network, and your ISP.

First off, your computer. Any bandwidth sharing/limiting software on your computer? Some of these are advertised as software that makes your connection faster. For example, ASRock calls theirs XFast Lan. What most of this software really does is makes sure no one program takes all of your network resources so there is some left over for other programs. Generally this kind of software works, but sometimes it makes a mess of things. If you have anything like this, test the connection with it turned off.

Similarly, there is security software out there that monitors your internet traffic. Normally it's not a problem, but once in a while it is ... if you have any, try turning it off.

Finally, don't forget drivers and hardware. Do you have the latest drivers? Have you tried reinstalling them? Are there any indications that hardware could be faulty (most NICs have have diagnostic software. It's mostly crap, but when your at your wit's end it's worth trying.)? Do you have a spare network card around to test with?

Your network .. How do you connect (WiFi, Ethernet, powerline, combination, etc)? Do other people use your network? How do they use the network (Email, web, netflix, gaming, etc)? Does your router do any kind of bandwidth sharing/limiting (often called QoS)? Anyone else having issues?

Finally, your ISP ... what kind of service (cable, DSL, satellite, fiber, etc)? What level of bandwidth(speed) do you pay for?

A couple quick tests:
Do you know your router's IP address? If so, open a command prompt and enter "ping -n 50 x.x.x.x" where x.x is the router's IP address. The average ping time should be very low (less than 1 ms) and there should be on packet loss.

Also, open a command prompt and enter "ping -n 50 google.com". The ping times should be consistent (mine vary between 20 and 25) and there should be no more than 1 packet lost.

I ping'ed my router's IP and I was getting 0 ms.
I ping'ed google and i was getting usually between 18 and 23 ms and usually it was at 19 ms.

Also, like i said how in the server list i was getting 63 ms, also the Network Icon (bottom right part of the screen) is 5 bars. (just if you need that info xP)

My down speed is always fine, and when my up is fine i get about 5 Mbps, and when I lag in game, THe bar is at 0 for about 1-2 seconds and then it stays to about 1 Mbps

Even when there is nobody else using it, it lags, and I am quite sure it is not the router that is the problem.
