Extend wifi and run traffic through managed switch

Hi peeps,

I have run cat5e cables throughout our 2 story home, all back to a NetGear GS116 managed switch, which then connects to our Sky hub router.

The wired speeds are great but, as there are so many wireless devices within the house (family of 4 with teenagers), the wifi performance isnt great. Also, as these devices are connected to the wireless router, the traffic isnt being managed by the switch.

I was wondering the best way to extend my wifi and get it running through the switch.

Would I be best to retain the Sky hub as the router, but disable wireless and add one or more WAPs downstream of the switch - I'm thinking one in the kitchen (where the router is) and one on the top floor?

If so, are there any recommendations as to economical WAPs that would work well with this set-up? It's a new build residential property, so I'm wary of going OTT on the spec of the WAPs, and spending money that simply isnt necessary.

The other option, I guess, might be to upgrade and replace the router, but a) the traffic will logically still not be going through the switch, and b) I won't be extending the wifi coverage by doing this (other than if the new router provides more powerful wifi signal, of course).

Ideally, I'd like the ability to managed at least three SSIDs (one for the adults and one for each of the kids) so I can independently control their wifi access. The WAPs would need to be capable of this.

Many thanks in advance,

Chris
