my family just ditched the ISP modem/router and a tplink router for a new tplink modem/router. after the change, i have been noticing weird moments when playing games because i would get frequent ping spikes all the time; before ping spikes doesnt happen that often, but I would just get kicked, but this also happens in the new modem/router, only that i can feel all the mini lag spikes happening unlike before it was smooth then boom im disconnected from the game.

all the routers, modems, modem/routers are wireless N 300mbps

old router= TPlink WR840N link to router page
old modem/router= ISP provided

new modem/router= TPlink W9970 link to modem/router page

Ok, so from your router to the first hop seems high and VERY jittery considering...

Can you login to your router, change the MAC address, and get a new public IP. With Verizon I had problems in the past with a particular network and changing my router's MAC address got me a new IP and new lease... If that doesnt work call the company up... See what's going on. It should be smoother than that for your first hop.

Download the program pingplotter standard (trial) and set it to ping every 1 second to www.google.com (or wherever). This will do a complete trace of where things are going and allow you to review the past to see when your ping spikes. Generally speaking, if you are seeing a high ping to your router, it's probably something to do with wireless interference or a problem with the switch internally. If you notice a high ping on the hop directly after your router, it's probably network congestion or problems from the ISP or cables etc... Of course this is just a few things that could be wrong... Make sure firmeware is updated, and make sure you have the latest drivers on your computer.

I didnt check but the problem still occurs even when I try to connect back to the modem/router my ISP gave us
