Hi Folks,

I am currently having a dilemma on my new processor i have installed on my pc. Current Specs:

Mobo: Asrock z97 Anniversary
CPU: Intel i7 4770k @4.2 GHZ
RAM: Corsair Vengence 12GB DDR 3, 1600MHZ
GPU: Nvidia GeForce 1050Ti 4GB
SSD: Samsung EVO 850 250GB
PSU: Corsair XC600M 600w
Display: Acer GN246HL 144HZ

After i installed the new processor i noticed it was using only 2 out of the 4 cores, and 4/8 threads. After some reading, i disabled Hyper Threading and noticed that my performance jumped and CPU ID now reads all 4 of my cores. However, its still only showing 4 threads instead of 8, and the 4770k does have 8 threads but is not being recognized. Is there any way to enable the use of 8 threads either through BIOS or MSCONFIG?

Looking for any advice, thank you.

Adyboi,

You may have missed 4745454b's answer above in the 8th post. I think he's correct. Except for the wrong Core / Thread count, since Windows is apparently running OK, it's unlikely that driver issues are causing the problem, and it's also unlikely that you need to reload Windows.

Windows 7 is not correctly configured in "msconfig", where the "Number of processors" or active cores can be changed / updated from your old 4 Core / 4 Thread FX 4100 to the 4 Core / 8 Thread 4770K. This setting is easy to miss, so you just need to get back to the right place in msconfig.

You mentioned "msconfig" in your initial post, so you were almost there, but let's take a closer look:

On your keyboard, press the "Windows" key and the...

I have disabled HT and CPU ID reads 4 cores and 4 threads. I thought however the 4770k had 8 threads or is that a mistake on my part?

Yes my BIOS is up to date, my previous CPU was an AMD FX 4100

My computer detects it as an Intel i7 4770k though, even the chip looks authentic as my brother fitted it in. The ebay seller was also a trusted one so i dont believe it is a scam, my original thinking is that it may have something to do with a BIOS option?

is your system showing all cores? that the reason to reinstall

4100 is 4 "cores", sometime it show as 2 cores with 4 thread.

My system is showing 4 cores 4 Threads with HT off. With HT on, it is showing 2 cores, 4 Threads. For whatever reason, my i7 4770k just isnt showing 8 threads.

Cinebench, CPU ID are all detecting 4 Threads instead of 8. This is what is confusing me.

Adyboi,

You mentioned "msconfig" in your initial post, so you were almost there, but let's take a closer look:

On your keyboard, press the "Windows" key and the "R" key to get the "Run" window, then type "msconfig" and hit "Enter".

In the "System Configuration" window, click on the "Boot" tab, then click on "Advanced options".

In the "BOOT Advanced Options" window, the box for "Number of processors" should be unchecked, and have a greyed out "1". This is the default setting, which means Windows will use all available physical and logical cores.

Regardless of what it says, click on the "Number of processors" box, change the number to "8", then click "OK".

In the lower right side of the "System Configuration" window, check the "Make all boot settings permanent" box, click "Apply", click "OK" then restart your rig.

If this fixes the problem, you should have 4 Cores / 8 Threads in CPU-Z, and your rig should behave accordingly.

You can then use CCleaner to clean up the registry.
