pc specks - i7 4790(coolermaster hyper 212 evo), gtx 980 palit edition, h81m-s2h, xfx ts 650w, Seagate 1tb hard drive, 2x8gb 1600mhz ddr3 corsair vengeance lp.

Hi i recently replaced my cpu cooler from the stock to the coolermaster hyper 212 evo. To make it easier to install i removed the ram sticks, after installing the cooler i placed the ram back into the motherboard and booted. The problem is when i boot my pc is stuck in a boot loop (sometimes my pc will boot but there is no power to my keyboard or mouse and there is no signal to my monitor). When i take one of the sticks out the pc boots fine and works as normal (it does not matter which ram stick i use or which ram slot i use). Both ram sticks still work as i can use any of the 2 to boot and i can also use any of the 2 ram slots and the pc will still boot as long as i am only using 8gb and not 16gb.

I have updated my bios which has done nothing, also my ram is 1.5v but i changed to 1.6v but nothing changed. I have looked on many threads but nobody seems to have an answer. All help appreciated, Thanks.

Also i have tried CMOS reset which has not worked.

Solution

as an entire bank of 100+ pins is dedicated to interfacing with a single RAM channel, I'd be inspecting your CPU socket or underside of CPU for bent/damaged pins, potentially induced during the cooler change...; spilling any conductive thermal interface material into the socket can have similar consequences....

Otherwise, your MB might be bad....

I took out the cpu cooler and the cpu checked the pins all seemed okay, also replaced the cpu paste and put the cooler back in. What would be your next steps it still is an issue

1. You sure you're installing them properly on same colors?
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/292125-30-installing-ddr3-dual-channel-memory#4283214

2. Also there are a lot of compatibility issues with dual or more channel RAMs. If you can, try underclocking to 1333MHz without changing RAM voltage.

3. Increase your CPU VCore a little too. Usually installing better cooler results in a voltage drop. Maybe your CPU is causing the crash.

EDIT: My bad. I saw the GTX 980 and thought for sure that his mother board has four slots.

@zebarjadi.raouf - That motherboard only has two RAM slots.

@liamnicho - Check these results:

Test 1)
DDR3_1: RAM_1
DDR3_2: Empty
Result: Boot Success

Test 2)
DDR3_1: Empty
DDR3_2: RAM_1
Result: Boot Success

Test 3)
DDR3_1: RAM_2
DDR3_2: Empty
Result: Boot Success

Test 4)
DDR3_1: Empty
DDR3_2: RAM_2
Result: Boot Success

Test 5)
DDR3_1: RAM_1
DDR3_2: RAM_2
Result: Boot Fail

If the CPU socket is clean and undamaged (no dust/bent pins), then I'd say something went wrong with the cooler install that damaged the motherboard.

Thanks for the help i found the problem while looking on some other forums. Basically the cpu cooler was putting too much pressure onto the cpu so i took it off and it booted so gone back to original stock cooler. Kind of annoying though wasted 35 pounds on a useless cooler. Liam.

Solution
Sadly, that solution is not the one you want but its really strange.
I think more than one person has had this problem and the problem comes to something not related directly to the computer but the heat sink is too tight. Amazing really how that can affect it and I am sure you've been pulling your hair out trying to solve it and now you have.
If you have not damaged it and its under 14 days and you bought it online, you should have the right to return it in its original packaging claiming it doesn't work, because it doesn't, it breaks your computer.

https://www.choose.co.uk/guide/online-shopping-rights-refund-protection.html
Consumers have a right to a refund when an item fails to match the information given prior to purchase and, often more helpfully, for any reason within a minimum 14-day cooling off period

yeah it is weird how something like that can affect it so much, was about to order a brand new motherboard thinking mine was broke. And unfortunately i am over the 30 days so its money down the drain. Any other coolers you would recommend that should be okay? Thanks, Liam.

Hi yeah thats what ive now done, i put the heatsink back on but screwed the screws so that they are only in very slightly (taken me about 2 hours finding the sweet spot) which seems to have fixed it, i am just worried that it will not be making full contact on the cpu so am doing some stress tests while watching my temps.
