I have been overclocking my cpu for the last couple weeks from 3.3 to 3.6ghz to run games. I have a amd a8-7650k and i have tried to overclock it today and it turns my screen black. I cannot understand why as i am upping the voltage and my cpu temp sits between 18-25C while playing games. Can someone help. ?

Solution
With an A series cpu? Ok. Certainly wouldn't be my first choice. The FX chips, which are older and have not been recommended for new gaming systems for many years now, are more powerful than any of the A series processors, but it is what it is I guess.

The bottom line is, AMD Overdrive is a seriously bad idea for overclocking.

If you're going to overclock it should be done via settings in the bios. If there are no overclocking settings in the bios, to MANUALLY configure an overclock, then that system should not be used for overclocking. That's just a fundamental tenet of systems management. I've seen Overdrive destroy tens of machines, but generally those were laptops people were using Overdrive to overclock on. Just because a thing...
No possible way in the entire world your CPU temps are below 40°C while playing games, and should more likely be in the 45-60°C range, depending on what kind of games, settings, cpu usage, etc. 18-25 is unrealistic. Highly improbable. Potentially impossible.

AMD sensors are not worth beans on the low end and it sounds like yours are either not working at all or you are monitoring the wrong temps. You need to download either HWinfo or CoreTemp, and install whichever you prefer, and check CORE temperatures while gaming. (NOT HWmonitor or OpenHardware monitor).

As far as your overclock goes, if you've been overclocking your CPU by 300mhz, with increased voltage and are using a stock cooler, it's highly possible you've fried the CPU, but that might be jumping to conclusions. Does it work at all with default settings and no overclock?

I have a water cooling setup for my computer and i am using coretemp and it says that my cpu is between 18-25C. My computer is fine as long as i do not overclock it. However as soon as i try change it the screen just turns black

So as you were asked by nerro120, what kind of temps does overdrive show when not overclocking? What is the distance to TJmax shown in overdrive?

I never had any luck with hwinfo and monitor for my fx 6100, would always report 14c on idle and around 25c under load of about 80%. I researched at the time and found that only amd overdrive would report proper temps even if it was thermal margin and if I remember correctly 62 was the max for the fx 6100, not sure about your apu. Don't use overdrive or any software to overclock as stated. Also you shouldn't have to up the voltage for that small of an overclock considering the boost affects one core up to 3.8.

Probably the MOST important, unspoken thing here is, what model is your motherboard? I have a very high suspicion that you may be overclocking on a motherboard that is not physical capable of supporting a stable overclock based what kind of VRM package it has. It's also possible that you've cooked the VRMs and it's instantly flaking out now when overclocked. Might even be throttling itself when it's not overclocked, but I'd need to see some screenshots when not overclocked and under load, of the CPU clockspeeds to know that.

As for HWmonitor, I already said it sucks. HWinfo and CoreTemp are the two best choices. Even AMD Overdrive isn't as accurate as CoreTemp tuned to Distance to TJmax settings from my experiences using both.

Look, unless you are literally gaming in a fridge - no way in hell your CPU is room temperature when gaming.

It's bloody physics. Your CPU can't be colder than what your room temperature is and especially not gaming. It does not matter whether you have water cooling or air or whatever, the only way is if you have refrigerated cooling for that to happen.
