a strange ethernet issue

i have been using an assembled computer for past 3 months, with a gigabyte motherboard.for past one week started using cable internet.now,when i connected the cable straight into my computer,the cable isnt identified while connected via router it works fine.now then i connected the same cable to my laptop's ethernet port directly it works.all am curious why it dint work when connected directly to my pc.(my router is under repair cant use internet)

So just to be clear, are you saying that you are connecting to a cable modem with an Ethernet cable, the laptop works but the PC does not?

Assuming the settings are the same on both devices for DHCP etc.. It may be that your PC does not support Automatic MDI/MDI-X detection.
Strictly speaking you should probably be using a crossover cable if connecting the PC direct to the modem, its possible that the laptop supports the capability to detect this but the PC does not?
