Can a 4K monitor switch to 1440p?

i want to buy a 4K monitor but if a game gets too laggy I want to be able to switch down the quality to 1440p. I want to know if you can change the quality of a 4K monitor down to 1440p

While monitors perform best at their native resolution, you can downgrade them to a lower resolution. This would require the monitor to "scale" the image to the selected resolution, and therefore it might not appear as sharp as a native 1440p or 1080p monitor.
