How to store an external hard drive as a back up - un-powered - for back-up purposes

Hello all,
There is currently nothing wrong with the external, however it is getting up there in years.
I don't recall the purchase date but the warranty expired in 2015, so in all probability it is at least 5 years old. I will be picking up a new HDD today and after a full format, will be transferring over the data.

The 2 drives are exactly the same and I am planning on putting the old drive in the new drives box and storing it in a fairly cool, dry closet. It was regularly accessed daily, no clue on how often, during that time and after looking on line, I could not find any information on long term, un-powered storage of an external HDD for back up purposes.

Do I need to regularly attach it and make sure it works and to make sure "the tires don't square"?
Any other tips?

Thank you and happy 4th to those in the States.

Nothing special about long term storage, cool and dry is perfect. If you reuse the new packaging put the drive in the anti static bag. No need to test it occasionally.

There's no need to keep connecting a properly stored HDD to a PC to check it still works okay. It's not going to suffer any additional wear and tear or develop a fault when it's stored away safely.

I've been storing the same WD drive in a drawer for the past 10 years and it's always worked when I needed to update some data on it (I use an HDD docking station for that purpose).
